A lifelong provocateur, Thornley was linked to many of the fringe elements of the time. He helped create the spoof religion called the Discordian Society and its tract, the Principia Discordia. He coined the term "paganism" to describe various nature religions. And he befriended Robert Anton Wilson, inspired the Illuminatus, and gave his anarchic support to the Bavarian Illuminati, a brilliant prank.
But Thornley's path also crossed Lee Harvey Oswald's. It's a fact that the two served together in the Marines. But did they keep in touch later, in New Orleans? And were they both used by foes of JFK? A tip from our 'wicked warlock' Richard Metzger: Adam Gorightly's new biography of 60s counterculture icon Kerry Thornley is one of our new favorite books here at the Disinformation offices. The Prankster and the Conspiracy is a well-researched, absolutely fascinating look at a life full of such bizarre twists and characters that it would be easier to swallow if it was fiction. But it's not. Thornley was friends with Lee Harvey Oswald, knew several key suspects in New Orleans DA Jim Garrison's investigation into the JFK assassination (and was himself accused of involvement with the plot by Garrison), was one of the first "pagans" to emerge from the hippie movement (and perhaps the first to start using that term at the time and popularize it in the culture) and along with Greg Hill and others (like Robert Anton Wilson) started the "joke" religion of Discordianism with the writing of the Principia Discordia (How I Found Goddess & What I Did To Her When I found Her).
