Yesterday Bill Klinton was scheduled to fly out of the District of COLUMBia to attend some fund-raisers in Texas. This evening he was to attend a dinner at the COLOMBe d'Or Hotel and Restaurant (around the block from my place), but changed plans so he could commiserate with the people suffering from the shootings at COLUMBine High School near Denver that occurred on the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's birthday.
COLUMB/COLOMB in this sense refers to a DOVE, originally "gray bird" with it's roots in the word black. This is the symbol of peace generally and the goddess Aphrodite. Curiously, a COLUMBarium is a vault with niches for urns containing the ashes of cremated bodies. As well, Saint COLUMBa, the holy dove is the "maiden martyr" COLUMBa of Sens, or in Celtic myth, COLOMBe, who mated with Lancelot as a lightning bolt, the Phallus of Heaven.
