Part VIII The following is part eight of a thirteen part serialization for the screenplay Blinded, written by Robert Sterling. It is suggested for mature audiences only. Though it is copyrighted, feel free to forward it to others, or to put it on your website. Sit back, turn down the lights, microwave a bag of popcorn, and enjoy the show.
INT. DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - AFTERNOON
Carl is alone here. He looks around to see no one's near, then walks to the shelf, and reaches in to move the boxes.
INT. SECRET CHAMBER - CONT.
Carl enters, turns on light, and walks upstairs.
CARL (v.o.) I keep thinking of her. How she smiles. Laughs. Everything. I need her. Badly.
He walks to secret opening and opens it.
INT. EVELYN'S BEDROOM CLOSET - CONT.
The closet has slats in the door so he can see the empty bedroom. Carl is crowded in, surrounded by furs and coathangers. He sits and waits.
INT. EVELYN'S BEDROOM CLOSET - LATER
He looks up and sees Evelyn walk in the room with Sigmund. Romantic music plays in the background, shot intercut between him and her with Sigmund. She gets on the bed with Sigmund and unbuttons her top. Carl looks with lust on his face. There is a sound of a zipper unzipping and ruffling of cloth. He stares on as she drops her bra and reveals a bare nipple. He looks in disbelief and excitement. Intershot between her breastfeeding and him staring in excitement. In slo- mo, she lifts her head and looks up in the sky. Carl licks his lips and closes his eyes, with a look of ecstasy. Shot of Evelyn and Sigmund, with a loud background sound of the baby sucking on the nipple. Carl, looking satisfied, lifts his left hand which has been unseen, and wipes his forehead, covered with sweat, on it. He exits the closet.
INT. PEERCEX WAITING ROOM - DAY
The shot opens with a picture of a big breasted African woman feeding a baby milk, from a National Geographic that Mr. Hood reads in this typical lobby. The door out front says "PEERCEX INC., HEADQUARTERS". An attractive female secretary walks up to him, MISS MAY.
MISS MAY Mr. Pierce will see you now.
He smiles and follows her to Mr. Pierce's office.
INT. MR. PIERCE'S OFFICE - CONT.
MR. PIERCE sits behind his desk on the phone. He hears a knock on the door.
MR. PIERCE Come in.
The two enter. Mr. Pierce smiles.
MISS MAY Mr. Pierce, Mr. Hood is here.
MR. PIERCE Thanks. (smiles) Oh, Miss May, could I have some more coffee?
MISS MAY Certainly, Mr. Pierce.
She picks up the coffee pot in the room, walks over to Mr. Pierce, bends over, showing her cleavage right in his face, and pours the coffee. He smiles. She stands upright and walks out of the room as the two stare at her. Mr. Pierce looks at Mr. Hood.
MR. PIERCE What a piece of ass. I love this job. (smile, pause) So, what's the latest news?
MR. HOOD (sitting down) Good. I've had discussions with some judges there, and they've indicated we're in the right.
MR. PIERCE (smiles at good news) I see. This discussion, I take, explains your well used expense account.
MR. HOOD I've talked to the plaintiff's lawyers, and explained the situation. They seem ready to settle. I believe I could get it in the hundred million range, or one billion less than what they're asking. It'd mean much for the future profitability of this corporation.
MR. PIERCE So you think we should accept?
MR. HOOD I don't think it's in our interest to go to court. The press has butchered us enough as it is by calling the dye "castratinine". If we fight, the vulture's may really be out. You may lose some friends in Washington.
MR. PIERCE But what if the media finds out about our little deal and discovers that we're trying to cover everything up?
They both stare at each other a second, and then they both begin to laugh.
MR. HOOD That's a good one.
MR. PIERCE (pause) One billion, huh? (beat) Hey, what's a hundred million, anyway? Go through with it.
MR. HOOD It's the best hundred million you'll ever spend. No press, no hype.
MR. PIERCE (smiles) Well, once again you've limited our liabilities. You've been quite an acquisition. You know, our company is growing. By the end of next decade, we'll be one of the ten biggest leading edge companies in the U.S. And while others are getting cutbacks, we're actually receiving more defense projects each year. (beat) Why I say this is I think it's time you had a more financial interest in Peercex. The board of directors are in agreement with me on this.
MR. HOOD (pause, smiles) Well, this is certainly surprising news. I have to fly to New York tomorrow to finalize the settlement. When I return, we can work out the terms.
MR. PIERCE Wonderful. I'm looking forward to it.
They shake hands and smile.
INT. CARL'S BEDROOM
The scene starts with Carl in bed, eyes open, staring upward as he tries the handcuff trick, cards lying next to him solitaire style. There is the background noise of Mr. Hood shouting.
CARL (v.o.) I still can't sleep. Two nights in a row. I took a nap this afternoon, but that's it. I lie in bed and imagine caressing her, treating her how she deserves to be treated. And all I hear is him. (pause) I must keep my hands busy.
INT. BREAKFAST TABLE - MORNING
Carl, Mr. Hood, and Evelyn are there. Mr. Hood reads the paper, that says, among the usual gloom, "UFO SIGHTINGS IN L.A.", and a flash for the business section, "PEERCEX AWARDED 'TERMINATOR' MISSILE PLAN". Evelyn and Carl look sick.
CARL (v.o.) This morning, Mr. Hood said he was going to New York for a few days. Good riddance. Maybe Evelyn will feel better. Her headaches are getting worse. Me, I don't think I can make it through the day.
Slo-mo of him staring at Evelyn.
INT. RECEPTION ROOM EVELYN'S OFFICE - DAY
Mr. Chamberlain is on the phone. Evelyn exits her office, carrying a briefcase, and begins to walk out, looking very sick. She walks to Mr. Chamberlain.
EVELYN Mr. Chamberlain, I'm going to lunch. I'll be back at one.
MR. CHAMBERLAIN (putting phone on hold) I was just about to ring, Ms. Hood. The Wilshire Emergency Clinic called.
EVELYN (closing eyes) Oh Jesus. Not now.
MR. CHAMBERLAIN There's a patient who needs to be seen immediately. Slashed his wrists. (beat) They need someone to talk to him, calm him down.
EVELYN (long pause, breathing in) Tell them I'll be right over.
She looks very sick.
INT. PADDED CELL - AFTERNOON
AN EMERGENCY PATIENT is in a straight jacket lies in it. He screams obscenities. Evelyn slowly enters the room, looking even worse. They stare at each other a moment, and he begins mumbling obscenities to himself. He looks up at her again.
EMERGENCY PATIENT You gonna fuck me?!
He receives a blank stare from Evelyn.
EMERGENCY PATIENT I said, you gonna fuck me ?!! That's all I want from you. Just fuck me!!!
EVELYN I don't think I...
EMERGENCY PATIENT You think! You all fucking think! All the fucking time!!!
EVELYN My name's Evelyn. I'm here to talk.
EMERGENCY PATIENT DON'T TALK! JUST FUCKING BLOW ME!
EVELYN (pause) Does it make you happy saying that?
EMERGENCY PATIENT Yeah. It makes me real fucking happy. (beat) Ever been treated like shit, bitch? Have you? I don't think so. None of you have. Ever been dropped? Huh? I have. My girlfriend found another dick and dropped me like I was fucking shit. (beat) So, you gonna fuck?
EVELYN I want to talk.
EMERGENCY PATIENT Talk's shit!! I want your pussy!!
EVELYN (pause, looking sicker) How did you feel about what your girlfriend did?
EMERGENCY PATIENT How did I feel? How did I fucking feel?! I wanted to fucking kill her!! (beat) No, first I'd fucking rape her, then I'd kill her. Then I'd fucking rape her again! And I'd cum in her fucking mouth! (beat, smiles) You know the difference between a dead chick and a sex doll? (beat) A dead chick's got movable fucking lips. (laughs) I'm a fucking comedian!! Aren't I fucking hilarious?!!
EVELYN You've done this before, haven't you? (pause) You have, haven't you?
EMERGENCY PATIENT You got a fucking file on me, don't you?!!
EVELYN No file. I can tell. (beat) It's okay. You don't have to act like this.
EMERGENCY PATIENT FUCK YOU!!
EVELYN It's okay. I won't laugh.
EMERGENCY PATIENT Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you!!!
He begins crying as she walks to him.
EMERGENCY PATIENT Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you.
He starts really crying. She walks to him and cradles him, like a mother. He cries in her arms as she tries to soothe him.
EXT. GARDEN MONTAGE - AFTERNOON
Carl works in disguise, looking tired and sick.
CARL (v.o.) God, it's hot, must be the hottest day of the year. I work and work, and as I do, I feel like I'm being watched. (beat) I miss Evelyn so much, even though she only left this morning. (beat) I feel like something's gonna blow...
He looks delirious, covered with sweat.
EXT. MANSION GROUNDS - EARLY EVENING
Evelyn's car pulls up. He stares at it, looking sick and full of lust. She gets out and walks to him, also looking sick. They stare at each other.
CARL How was your day?
EVELYN Not good. I'm not feeling well. (beat) If you don't mind, I don't think we should do therapy today.
CARL (looking down) Okay.
She begins walking away.
CARL Wait.
She turns back to him.
CARL Evelyn, I, I... need you.
EVELYN (long pause, sick look on face) Wh... what?
CARL I... need you. (pause, looking down) I love you, Evelyn. I'm crazy about you.
She stares at him, sick and confused, as he has his eyes closed in fear. He opens them, and sees her staring at him. Suddenly, they both move towards each other. They embrace and kiss passionately. As they do, there is a shot of the garden snake, slithering into a hole in the ground, out of sight. The shot pulls up, and we see an aerial view of them kissing. The shot pulls up until its behind a window from the top of the house, still looking down on them.
INT. EVELYN'S BEDROOM - EVENING
They're in bed together, caressing each other. Slowly, they take off each other's clothes. They kiss, lick, and tongue each other's bodies. As they are about to have an orgasm, the camera pulls back to the closet. From it, a clicking sound of a camera snapping a picture is heard, as they have a passionate orgasm.
INT. EVELYN'S BEDROOM - LATER
They lie in bed together, holding each other. They look at each other and smile.
CARL You feeling better?
EVELYN I'm feeling wonderful. And you?
CARL (smiles, kisses her) I love you.
EVELYN I knew you did from the moment we first met. And I felt the same.
CARL When I first saw your picture in the phone book, you struck a cord inside of me. I had to meet you.
He kisses her, then looks to the side of the bed. There are some pieces of cardboard. He lifts them up, and sees they're ink blots. He smiles.
EVELYN We were going to do this our next session.
CARL Let's do it now.
She smiles, and takes the cards from him. She lifts one, and puts it in front of him.
EVELYN What's this remind you of?
CARL (looks, then smiles) I see your face. The most lovely face in the world.
She smiles back. She changes blot drawings.
EVELYN What do you see in this?
CARL (looks, then frowns) Him. I see him. (beat) How did you two meet?
EVELYN (looking away painfully) At a business conference. Let's not talk about him.
CARL I hate him. I wish he was dead.
EVELYN I know you do. But you don't know him. He can be awful, but he can be so, so sweet.
CARL You deserve better.
EVELYN I have better.
They look at each other and smile, then they kiss. He takes the cards from her, and tosses them away.
CARL Let's forget the therapy. I don't care who I was anymore.
EVELYN I was thinking the same thing. (beat) You know, I've been reading about people without sight at birth due to cataracts. When a safe operation was developed for it, there was studies done on those operated on. The surprising thing was many still couldn't see, even though their cataracts was gone.
CARL What was stopping them?
EVELYN They were stopping themselves. Sight was a new experience for them, and it overwhelmed many patients. For many, sight was too stressful to use, so their mind blocked it out. I think the same thing is happening to you. Whatever caused you to go into a fugue, it's gone now. But remembering who you are is just too stressful, so you choose not to know.
CARL (pause, thinking) I think you're right. Will I ever remember who I was?
EVELYN (smiles, touches his face) I think so. When you're ready, it will all come back, just as sight eventually did for most patients. But there's no hurry.
CARL No, there isn't. (smiles) I don't give a shit who I was. My life begins with you. (he kisses her) Besides, I know who I am now.
EVELYN And who's that?
CARL Your love slave.
They smile, look at each other, and begin to tumble in the sheets.
