Ten Best Konspiracy Films

(At Least, According to Reel.com)

Fox New Year's Day 2000 Conspiracy Special

In case you couldn't tell by the shameless (and exploitative) usage of banners at the site, The Konformist now has a deal with two video distributors, Reel.com and Pulse TV. In what is a remarkable coincidence, Reel.com has come up with a list of 10 konspiracy films that it recommends, with a bizarre headline. (Just why shouldn't we "Worry About the Government"?)

Personally, I find this list kind of limited. Which is why I'm encouraging you all to send your own picks for favorite films - hell, it doesn't even have to be about conspiracy. Who knows: soon enough, we may even have our own Konformist 100 top films.

In any case, it is highly encouraged that you take a look at these flicks (and mindlessly consume them as well, since we get a cut of the profits.) And while you're at, get the New And Improved Zapruder Film, courtesy of Pulse TV.

Don't Worry About the Government

If you've gone to the movies in the last 35 years, then you know that our country is not run by the President and Congress. Instead, if you believe the movies, the U.S. is controlled by a shadowy parliament of military and industry heads who monitor our every move and eliminate any who might oppose them. It's enough to make you stay home and lock the door.

What Tinseltown has tapped into are fears about the government that can be traced back to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the subsequent House investigation. With the government's potential complicity in the killing never fully resolved, the notions that conspiracies riddle every aspect of society slowly seeped into the collective mind of America. And movies reflected this trend.

With the 1991 release of Oliver Stone's JFK, the paranoia floodgates flew open and now it's the American way to fear the government. The enormous popularity of the The X-Files TV series only reinforces the widespread belief that the government has a role in countless cover-ups: alien abductions, genetic alterations, mass genocide,

you name it. Now, with the release of a digitally enhanced version of the Zapruder film capturing the Kennedy assassination -- Image of an Assassination -- conspiracy theorists have even more to feed upon.

For those who seek to retrace the evolution of the conspiracy theory mindset, Reel.com's put together a list of some of Hollywood's best conspiracy movies. Check them out, but don't let anyone see you doing it!
